Ghana’s rising star: Bisa in Serious Action

Ronald Kweku Dei Appiah - the acclaimed Ghanaian king of the contemporary Highlife genre - makes his debut on Coke Studio Africa 2017 paired with Ugandan pop icon Eddy Kenzo. He goes by the name Bisa (Boy in Serious Action) Kdei and is well loved for his hit songs Mansa, Life with Patoranking and Feelings featuring Reekado Banks.

Before the stardom, Bisa’s beginnings were humble. He started a career in music by first becoming a rapper at the age of 13. By 15 he had switched to singing after realizing he had a bigger passion for it. The youngster would later start a music group called BISA (Boys in Serious Action) but after some time, they decided to embark on their own solo projects. He says: “It is not easy being in a group especially when you are the leader. You take decisions so everyone is looking up to you and sometimes you plan on something and the other parties do not agree. It is like a whole burden on you. It’s hard.”

Like any other artist, Bisa struggled through the beginning of his music career. He explains: “I found it difficult coming up. Sometimes, I had to struggle for money just to go to the studio for a demo before I started producing and the most hurting thing is after you record and you show it to someone who might be of help to you, the person then turns their back on you and it kills your spirit.”

The award-winning multi-talented artist has produced two albums so far and is all set to release the latest album dubbed “Feelings”. Bisa Kdei identifies himself as an introvert but fun to be with: “I hardly go out because I am always tied up in the studio trying to cook something up. My life is all about music.”

Bisa shot to musical stardom against a backdrop of the release of an award-winning movie soundtrack he composed. This made him become one of the first Ghanaian artists to break into the limelight with a movie soundtrack. This also earned him a number of awards including Best Movie Soundtrack of the Year, both at the Ghana Movie Awards and the Kumasi Based Movie Awards (2012). Bisa has since trained himself to become a versatile singer and sound engineer. He is also one of Ghana’s most established music producers. His debut 16-track album Thanksgiving came out in 2013. It debuted at number one in Ghana and is still getting impressive sales on iTunes and Spotify. Two years later, he released his second 10-track studio album dubbed “Breakthrough” under his record label Black Legendary Music.

His musical success has seen him win several coveted awards such as Best Singer at the Teen Choice Awards (2015). At the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (2015), Bisa got a double nomination for Best Highlife Song of the Year and Best Highlife Musician of the Year. On Coke Studio Africa, Bisa performs and records music fusions alongside Eddy Kenzo and Shellsy Baronet from Mozambique. Celebrated South African music producer DJ Maphorisa made sure they had a good time. Bisa asserts: “We made awesome music at Coke Studio.”
