The beauty of Coke Studio Africa is that it serves us with world-class music performances from some of Africa’s brightest and most promising stars. On the show we get to discover artistes who have the potential to become even bigger and reach audiences across Africa. I had never heard any of Ben Pol’s songs before Coke Studio Africa but as soon as I encountered him at an exclusive meet-up session during the show’s recording, I checked out his music and immediately fell in love.

Ben Pol is Tanzania’s king of R&B; he has in fact been nominated four times at the local Kilimanjaro Awards and won three of those times. He was also declared best entertainer at Tanzania’s 30 Under 30 Youth Awards (2013). He has further garnered numerous nominations and awards. In light of this talent, it was a perfect match to pair him with the fast rising Kenyan femcee Wangechi. Their chemistry was evident during the recording of the show and can even be seen in their performance.

Ben Pol and Wangechi’s producer Silvastone praised the duo for being the easiest to work with. He said: “They understood what to do with their music and brought in workable solutions. In just four days they have taken very little time to practice and come up with something really good.”

The pairing would go on to create magic in form of a rap and R&B mash up

Not only did the mash up sound completely unified, the messages in both songs mashed up well. Wangechi’s Do For Love is about a guy who didn’t live up to his role in a relationship, while Ben Pol’s Ningefanyaje is about letting go of a person you loved.

The 2015 MOBO Award Nominated Silvastone, for Best African Act, is based in the UK. He said that he would like African music to transcend continental lines. His passion for African music has made him visit different countries to learn more about their music. I’m guessing Coke Studio Africa will remain to be one of his best experiences this year.
