Obuya Owino also known as Chalo T is a Kenyan percussionist on the Coke Studio Africa   4 house band.  A master of his art, Obuya is undoubtedly one of the most acclaimed music percussionists in Kenya. He has developed great skills in playing different genres of music ranging from afro-jazz, afro- traditional as well as the reggae beat.

Obuya’s interest in playing the drums piqued while he was still in high school under the mentorship of the renowned percussionist Coco Malali. He would later hone his skills at the Kenyan National Theatre, charting a way for his musical journey and success.

As a talented drummer, Obuya has been performed with renowned bands as well as been part of album recordings. Notably among them Kikwetu, Jazz Tu, Mystik Natural, Owiny Sigoma, Kachumbari 7 and BLNRB – a Goethe-Institut music project between Berlin and Nairobi artistes. He has also toured widely to perform in Kenya and abroad in countries like Canada, Europe, Japan and Qatar.

When he is not performing with the Coke Studio Africa band, Obuya gives back and inspires the younger generation by teaching music students and imparting his skills. He also co-hosts a community-based drum circle. He can also be found living as a session musician for various artistes. Obuya unwinds by spending his time with his biggest fans – his “beautiful family,” he says.
